Ava, a sweet and mischievous two-year-old, is ready to experience cycling joy this spring. She was born with complications which led to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy and epilepsy at just six months old. Ava’s parents, Katherine and Anie, were told by her doctors she might never walk or talk. I’m sure you can appreciate how heartbreaking this uncertainty was for them. With expert support from the Rehabilitation Centre for Children and her own determination, Ava is developing and thriving.
Your contribution today will help provide Ava with an adaptive bike. This will ensure she has the opportunity to experience the many benefits a custom bike offers.
“An adaptive bike will allow Ava to move more independently, explore, play and just be a kid,” shared Katherine.
Ava was assessed for a customized adaptive tricycle earlier this year. The moment her feet were on the bike, she instinctively began pedalling, her excitement lighting up the room. A new bike will help strengthen her body, cater to her sensory needs and enable participation with her family and friends.
“We love being outdoors together, and you can tell Ava just wants to get out of her stroller and move. She will be able to ride alongside us now and even race with our dog, Phoenix!” Conveyed Katherine with a laugh.
Your support this spring will fund Ava’s bike and others for youth on our lengthy waitlist. The Foundation received over 100 requests last year for custom bikes.
Each adaptive bike is carefully chosen and designed to meet a child’s unique needs. Your generosity provides this transformative equipment, ranging in cost from $2,000 to $7,000.
Are you aware the Foundation’s bike program operates on a loan basis? As youth outgrow their bikes, they are returned and repurposed for another recipient. Your gift truly keeps giving, often serving several young people over the years.
“We are so grateful for this opportunity,” explained Anie. “Donors to the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation are helping Ava in ways we never imagined.”
Are you able to offer your generosity to help fulfil Ava’s need for a custom bike? Donate today to help youth on the waitlist for adapted equipment.
