The Winnipeg Avros U18 AAA hockey team went above and beyond at this year’s Michael Gerl CanPlay Hockey Classic. The local team raised over $5,500 to support the purchase of a specialized bike and sensory equipment for an elementary school in the St. James Assiniboia School Division.

This marks the second year the team has funded a specialized bike, a new tradition they eagerly anticipate each season.

“I am an educator in the school division and get to witness the impact of these bikes on a daily basis,” shared Ashley Van Aggelen, coach of the Avros Hockey Team. “Last year’s Avros’ bike recipient is a student of mine and to see the smile on her face and gained mobility when she skirts around the hallways is incredible.”

Avery Shortridge, Avros Assistant Captain and one of the team’s fundraising leaders, emphasized how much this initiative means to the team.

“This is a chance for us give back to our community. To see a bike branded with the Avros colours and logo is really cool. The whole team was excited for this,” commented Shortridge.

Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation has received almost 80 requests this year for adapted bikes to be provided to individual youth living with disabilities or for program bikes in schools. Each bike costs an average of $5,000. The equipment is life changing, providing many benefits including cardiovascular exercise, regulation, independence and participation.

“The Foundation and Lakewood School are grateful to Van Aggelen and her Avros players for their commitment to paying it forward. They are an example of what can be accomplished as a team in support of youth who need our help,” said Jane Kidd-Hantscher, CRF’s Executive Director.
