Perfect example of kids helping kids

What an exciting day in the Foundation office!
Our friends Laura, Garth, Rylyn and Jackson came for a visit and delivered the money they fundraised in the last 18 months.
Their goal - to raise enough money so CRF could purchase a specialized bike for child. This weekend, they reached their goal!
In the last 18 months, the family organized two garage sales, a lemonade stand, a coffee stand, a cookie sale and a coin drive. Rylyn (10) and Jackson (7) even donated their birthday money the last two years to the cause.
In total the family raised $3,430! Way to go!
Here's a photo of Rylyn and Jackson showing off their great poster which details how they raised the money.

Thank you so much to Laura, Garth, Rylyn and Jackson for their exceptional fundraising work! We are so proud of you, and delighted to have you as part of the CRF family.
This summer, the family will present the purchased bike to a ten-year-old girl from Winnipeg. Stay tuned for that update!

Sophie's Story

Last month at the RBC employee launch for the 2013 RBC Cruisin' Down the Crescent, we heard a few stories from RBC employees about their motivations for being involved.
One story that touched our hearts was Sophie's Story. Sophie's mom, Renee, read the following speech, and letter from Sophie about why their family is involved in this great fundraiser. Please read on.
Supporting community ... Supporting family: Sophie's story

"One of our three missions when volunteering, is supporting community and giving back to community. To me, "community" also means family.
Volunteering in support of the Children's Rehabilitation Foundation has given back to my family, it has given back to me! The entire experience to volunteer together with my daughter has allowed me to grow as a mother and has enriched our family relationship.

In our family, it is customary to have big birthday parties for our children as the day is all about them. When I discovered that the 2012 RBC Cruising Down the Crescent was on the same day as my daughter's birthday, I initially felt that I possibly couldn't volunteer as I did not want to take away from her special day...... I had to stop myself and think twice. I would actually be taking away from Sophie by not allowing her to make her own decision of what she actually wanted to do on her Birthday.

I proposed the idea to Sophie of volunteering on her birthday. We visited the Children's Rehabilitation Foundation site together and viewed many videos of children that benefited from what Children's Rehabilitation Centre does. Sophie was particularly inspired by Andrew Fenwick's story, as they were approximately the same age and she could make a connection.

The experience to volunteer has given more back to my family than I ever expected, it has been life changing! I am extremely thankful and proud to be a part of RBC!

In her own words, here is Sophie's story about her birthday experience:

Hello, my name is Sophie . I am happy to share my experience with Cruisin' Down the Crescent. It all began two years ago... I walked for the first time. I loved it. I was proud to be able to walk ten kilometers and I felt good that I was walking for a good cause.

The next year, I was turning 11 and I was happy about my upcoming birthday. My mom asked me if I wanted to go to the walk again. The day fell on my birthday. My mom left the decision up to me. After we watched videos of kids at the Children Rehabilitation Foundation, I quickly accepted. I thought of how lucky I was and how blessed I am. I decided to raise funds.

I am a shy person and it was hard for me to go door to door, but I always kept in mind the kids that I could help. I also invited a couple of my friends to come to walk with me. My birthday was one of the best ever!Overall, I was proud to achieve another ten kilometers and I look forward to going for the rest of my life.

You might think your not athletic or fit enough but it doesn't matter. The volunteers are so nice and encouraging passing out water and snacks. The houses down the Crescent are amazing to see! The warm up is fun too. You are never pressured to be the first one the finish as you can go your own pace. So, this year I am inviting my entire class to join me. I hope you will come too."

Thank you CRF Volunteers...

Today's post comes from Alexis Nicholson, the CRF Volunteer Coordinator.
"This year was an amazing year for CRF because of all the hard work and commitment from our volunteers. In total, our 305 volunteers donated 1938 volunteer hours last year.
When you come and volunteer at the Children's Rehabilitation Foundation, you help give a child a better chance at success.
Thank you!"

Can Eating Healthy be Therapeutic? You Bet!

The Children's Rehabilitation Foundation is the proud funder of the Rehabilitation Centre for Children's Cooking Club for Teens program. Thanks to the generous donations from our supporters, the Foundation is able to provide the funds to operate these clubs across Manitoba.
This year, the Foundation received a Nourishing Potential grant from the Winnipeg Foundation to help cover the cost of the Clubs. Thank you Winnipeg Foundation for supporting our Clubs and all the children who benefit from taking part in this fun after school activity.
This week, Stacy Cardigan from Winnipeg Foundation published an about the Cooking Clubs for Teens program she visited last month. Click here to read the article and find out more about the Cooking Clubs for Teens program.
Again, thanks to your support, the Foundation is able to make sure there is funding for this valuable and life changing program. Thank you!

CRF Committee Member auditions for Amazing Race

What a great video!
Congrats to Victor Andres (longtime member of the CRF PR Advisory Committee and fabulous supporter of CRF) for his awesome audition tape for Amazing Race Canada.
Victor and his team member Romeo Routhier (a City of Winnipeg firefighter) are both adventure-lovers and are auditioning for Amazing Race Canada. They have selected CRF as their charity of choice for their Amazing Race Canada journey.
In their words, "There's no height you can't reach. It's all about ability baby! Whoo!"

Meet Andrew - CRF's 2013 Youth Representative

CRF is excited to introduce you to Andrew Fenwick, a 17 year old student from Churchill High School.

Andrew loves to watch movies with his dad, and spends lots of time in the winter helping coach his highschool boys’ basketball team. He is a big sports fan - Bombers, Jets, Goldeyes, boxing, mixed martial arts - you name it, he loves it! He’s also a classic car buff - his dream wheels are a 1968 Oldsmobile 442.
Andrew will be graduating Grade 12 this June. In the fall, he plans to pursue a Psychology degree at University of Manitoba, followed by a Law degree. He’s keen on the law, and willing to take on any good argument where he can exercise his persuasion skills.
Andrew first came to the Rehabilitation Centre for Children (RCC) six years ago. When Andrew was 10, his appendix burst and his body was filled with sepsis. Andrew was in a coma, and when he awoke, he could only move his eyes. With the help of his physiotherapist Jane Daniels at RCC, the encouragement and support from his family and friends, and his own personal strength, perseverance and determination, Andrew is on the brink of walking across the stage to receive his Grade 12 diploma. He is an inspiration to the Foundation, reminding us that we can achieve whatever we put our mind to.
Andrew will be featured in CRF marketing materials this year, including RBC Cruisin’ Down the Crescent, A Night of Miracles and One Child’s Dream. Look for his photo in upcoming posters, ads, brochures, and the occasional TV appearance. Check out his first video on the CRF Youtube channel (youtube.com/user/childrensrehab).

Ride for Rehab - Day 3

On Wednesday, the snowmobilers enjoyed another fantastic day riding. They received another 4 inches of snow throughout the day and our sources tell us the scenery looked beautiful.

They stopped in for lunch at The Fortune Bay Casino in Fortune Bay, Mel Georges in Elephant Lake and the Ely Steakhouse in Ely. The riders experienced several breakdowns throughout the day but the wonderful support crew came to the rescue each time. A big thank you to all of the restaurants and servers for accommodating us this year and for all of your amazing service. You all have been amazing!
